How To Connect Mortgage Accounts

There are a few different ways to set up and maintain your mortgages and loans on Stessa. Choose the best method for your situation.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Stessa makes it easy to track your mortgages and loans, whether you connect them automatically or enter the details manually. Accurate setup ensures your dashboards reflect the right loan-to-value ratios and debt totals.

Option 1: Connect Your Mortgage Automatically

  1. Go to Properties and click on the property you are connecting a mortgage for.

  2. Select Financials & Assets, then "Add" within the Mortgage card.

  3. Select "Connect bank account"

  4. Click + Add Bank and search for your lender.

  5. Select the correct result, enter your login credentials, and follow any verification steps.

  6. Wait while Stessa authenticates and attempts to establish a secure connection.

After Connecting

Some institutions only provide basic data like balance and payment amount. After connecting you want to double check the information and add any missing details.

  • On the mortgage card click the 3 dots and choose Edit.

  • Review and update. (It's very important that the Original Loan Amount has a value)

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for mortgage payments to appear in your transactions. If you still don’t see data after that, your lender may only provide basic info like the current balance.

Tip: If your lender doesn’t provide specific payment data, connect the bank account from which you pay the mortgage. Stessa will import the outgoing payments so you can categorize them as "Mortgage Payment.

Option 2: Add Mortgage Manually

If your mortgage can't be connected automatically, you can still track it manually.

  1. Go to Properties and click on the property you are connecting a mortgage for.

  2. Select Financials & Assets, then "Add" within the Mortgage card.

  3. Select "Add Manually"

  4. Add Mortgage Info:

    1. Lender

    2. Account Name

    3. Account Number

    4. Current Principal Balance

    5. Original Loan Amount (used for Cash-on-Cash return)

    6. Origination Date

    7. Interest Rate %

    8. Amortization

    9. Term

    10. Monthly Payment

    11. Select whether the payment includes insurance and/or property taxes

Please ensure that the "Original Loan Amount" field contains a valid value. Stessa will utilize this number to compute the denominator for your Cash on Cash return metric. If this field is left empty, the Cash on Cash metric will presume that the asset was purchased with all-cash.

Avoiding Duplicate Transactions

If both the mortgage account and the payment account are connected:

  • Stessa will try to detect and suppress duplicates by marking one side as a Transfer.

  • Transfers do not affect reports or cash flow.

Still seeing duplicates? Contact Support via the messenger in the bottom right corner.

Portfolio Loans (One Loan for Multiple Properties)

Stessa doesn’t yet support loans tied to multiple properties (portfolio loans). As a workaround:

  • Manually allocate the total loan across your properties.

  • Update principal balances quarterly or annually to reduce manual tracking.
